Alright, now you're teaching me something new. I didn't know gile was a word.
I looked it up and it's old Irish. Where did you learn that one?

😁 Have some friends across the British isles and picked up a few words here and there. If you're ever in Wales and hear the expression 'It was a shot for open goal.', meaning: 'It was simply too easy to make that joke, I just couldn't help myself.', that was introduced by me (and a literal translation from a Dutch expression) when I worked there for two months in 1999. Language keeps changing and growing. I love it! 😊 Fun fact: the Dutch introduced the word 'Bier' ('Beer' in English. Pronounced the same) to the French: 'Bière'. 🍻

There's also the word guile which is being sly or clever. I thought maybe gile was its root but not so. They mean similar things but not exactly the same.

Interesting! The Dutch word for gile is 'gal' (with the Dutch guteral g-sound. That people make when they literally spew their gile. Isn't that funny?) so I guess they have the same root. There was this guy who set out on a quest: to prove every single word in every single language had a Dutch origin. He more or less succeeded (at least in proving you can prove - I'm practicing my proofs and proves - anything as long as you dig deep enough) but no one took him seriously.
