It all depends on how far their civilization has come to.
If their less advanced than humans. Then they can't exactly contact us.
If they have technology more advanced than us. They probably could be trying to reach us but we don't have the technology to detect their presence.

If they're much more advanced than us they probably view us as violent apes not worth contacting.

You probably are right on that, who knows what's out there.

Seeing as some people legit think JFK’s coming back from the dead, and compare wearing a piece of cloth to one of the most infamous genocides to have ever happened, we probably ARE violent apes not worth contacting

Well just imagine a planet full of bears. They'd still be aliens, but they're bears

Because they'd have to have faster than light travel to get to earth. As far as we know this is impossible, so an alien race that figured it out, would have to be very advanced.
Now just random aliens a million light-years away? No way to tell. They could be sentient slimes living off moss that grows on the side of rocks for all we know.

They most certainly are real. The size of the universe, and the enormous possibility for life elsewhere makes it a virtual certainty.

There are likely alien civilizations that are both more and less advanced than we are. It wouldn't surprise me to find there is an alien species that is identical to us, and as likely - there are alien species that are so completely different that we might not even recognize them as sentient life......non-carbon based, methane instead of water, plant based advanced life forms even.

The possibilities boggle the mind - as does the vastness of space. Even if the universe is teeming with life - the chances of any intelligent life being close enough that we'd meet them are very very small.

If they were real, I wonder how they came to existence . . .

Religion and science both have answers to that question.

Depends on the resources of their planet. If they don’t have decent metals or anything to get to the point of using metals then no.
OR
If there home planet is rich in both oxygen (increasing biodiversity ) and raw materials then yes
