Here in the south (or at least around where I live) it's a popular side dish around the holidays. I consider it more of a dessert than a side dish, but us southerners use any excuse we can to put something sweet on the table, lol.
The two schools of thought are putting marshmallows on top and toasting them, which is more something that came from the older generations I think, and then the candied pecan topping which is the streusel topping I mentioned. That one is much better in my opinion.
