Culture is not religion.
The difference with eastern religions, is they aren't trying to convert me or influence my government politics. They aren't knocking on my door asking if I've heard the word. They aren't shaming some of my friends who happen to be gender-diverse.
Even so. Since I was raised Christian/Mormon, I can make fun of it. Same way a black person can say black jokes; you're making fun of yourself.
So, to circle back to my previous comment about how religious types write their own material for us to laugh at...? If anyone uses religion as a reason for an action or government policy... I don't care if you follow Jehova, Allah, Yahweh, Jesus, or the Flying Spaghetti Monster... I will laugh at you. Because if your reasoning is "God says so. So it should be for you as well." I will always laugh at you as you're trying to impose your religious beliefs on me, while you claim to be logical or knowledgeable when looking at this from a secular standpoint, one could call it lunacy.
"There's an invisible man, living up in the sky. Who is watching us, watching everything we do, of every minute, of every day. And he has a list of TEN THINGS HE DOES NOT WANT YOU TO DO. (Mind you, homosexuality is not in said list.) If you break any of these rules, regardless of the severity, he has a special place for you. Where, you can suffer and burn, with fire and brimstone, knowing torture and pain, until the end of time.
... But he loves you. He loves you and he needs money! All powerful, all knowing, just can't handle money! Religions take billions of tax breaks every year, and they always seem to want a little more... If you wanna hear a good bullshit story... H-O-L-Y S-H-I-T."
- The Late Great George Carlin.
Paraphrased quote, I didn't get it right... but, yeah. He has a good take on religion. Just YouTube "Religion is bullshit." George Carlin was Catholic, if you didn't know.
