Augustine was a Manachian at one point, among other religions he went through before adopting Christianity.

Constantine 'turned Christian' and made it the state religion in order to reinvigorate the fading Roman Empire, a unifier to give an apathetic people a vision, a cause.
Then, of course, he remolded it to fit his vision.
