The kind of things that would fester in a mask would be things like fungi. The covid particles will largely slip through the mask, while the moist warm mask would become a breeding ground for fungus. The mask does little to stop covid and if used improperly could lead to more respite problems. Look at india a few months ago when they had a big respite fungal outbreak. Most likely caused by reusing old masks.

No. It just exists in the air. Everywhere in the air. Try making your own sourdough bread; just leave flour and water out in your clean house and you will soon have a fungus growing in your kitchen.
