I’m trying to balance school with work, so can’t put in full time hours. I’m only 21, so don’t have a very high credit score. I also have a criminal record, which vastly limits my acceptance to apartments, including affordable ones. Nearly every apartment in my area is more than one of my paychecks each month.

Homeless people often can’t get jobs because they don’t have stable housing. They might accept lower paying jobs that don’t pay for housing. Almost nowhere in the US can someone working for minimum wage afford rent anywhere.

Again, get a better job. Minimum wage was never meant to be a "livable wage".
Develop better or more marketable skills.

Every one of those people hold those jobs because they perform them well, and that takes skill.

They "hold" those jobs because they haven't the "skills" to anything else. Or because they make excuses for their inabilities and are too lazy to "put in the work" necessary to obtain real skills.

Nonsense. I know of three people, friends of mine, who got caught up in the CJS. They got out, they dusted themselves off, got their feces consolidated, and made something of themselves. One, retired from a fantastic oil & gas career, three kids, and 7 grandchildren. The next one, currently employed with a service company, owns a nice 4 br, 3 bath house on 5 acres ( still paying on his mortgage. Married with children and two grandchildren. The third one struggles, but is working for himself as a master carpenter, married with two kids, and buys a new car every 3 years or so.
What is their secret? They didn't make excuses and worked their asses off to make a live for themselves.
