Well, it’s not just liberals that don’t seem to care where people want to live. I genuinely don’t care. If a person crosses the border without documentation. Finds a place to live, and doesn’t work, then they should still find an immense difficulty getting government help. If the problem is they receive too much government help? Then shut that down. Let them stay here.
If they want to work, then let them apply for citizenship while waiting in the country. If you make them wait too long then of course they will work off the books. People need to always work to put food on the table. Refusing them work and citizenship is irresponsible and will just lead to more lawbreaking.
If they break the law then ship ‘em back. And I don’t mean break the law for failing bureaucratic procedures. It is very clear the average American is rather ignorant of these kind of things themselves. Expecting foreigners to know them while we don’t is beyond hypocrisy, and just plain stupid. One might even categorize it as malicious if these are only used as an excuse to keep any immigrants, legal or otherwise, from working here.
If the laws they break are outright criminal. Stealing, selling drugs - ship them back. Murder? Hold them. Hold them indefinitely. Put them into our prison system.
In some ways, this is actually what our immigration looks like already. Except we just hold them indefinitely until we can get documentation. After a few weeks or months, assuming they’ve done nothing terribly wrong, we just unload them wherever.
We can do better.
We should not be scared of them.
There is no place on Earth where there are not bad people. But crossing the border illegally is not, by itself, indicative proof that they are bad. Scared, yes. But not necessarily evil intent.
Republicans use to understand this. Sometimes better than even Democrats. This was OUR platform for many years. Crossing the border is not a crime. But we didn’t have to grant anyone citizenship. We need to fix that. If people want to live here, then we should let them. If we continue to let terrorist actions to define any foreigner, then how is that any different from any stupid liberal labeling any Republican a white nationalist or an insurrectionist?
