Ideally, people would only get reelected for doing a good job... But that is a very difficult thing to control. Many people just vote for who they know (and they agree with on basic principles at least) and that is usually someone who spent a lot of time, money, and energy on campaigning...

That's why I believe we need term limits to discourage it

I agree. However, when terms are limited some power shifts to the unelected career bureaucrats, who then hold more institutional knowledge & can work around freshmen legislators or wait them out.

So many of our laws are general directions and the bureaucracy actually fills in the details. If Congress does not like those details then they pass laws restricting the administrative rules. The IRS and EPA are good examples. The bureaucrats become bolder when they have green legislators who will be gone under term limits. Easier to mislead them or wait out the opposing legislator under term limits, then do what they please when she is gone.

Senate gets 6 yrs so that there are fewer knee jerk relations for re-election or fast fixes that are poorly thought out.

My understanding is that we the sheeple have had term limits voted down 3 times by the rulers and dictators we the sheeple wanted term limits for.

Depends which part of the congress you’re talking about, the senate or the House of Representatives.
And as such I’ll do both, starting with the senate. I believe that the senate should serve [at most] three four year terms. Secondly for the House of Representatives I believe that they should serve relatively similar terms, which would be two five year terms. I also believe that there should be elections held every even year for the House of Representatives, for the senate, on any even year 1/3 of the senate will be up for election.
