Most draft dodgers were not patriots. They were wise cynics or cowards but not -- generally speaking -- patriots. The wise cynicism came into play when they studied history and determined that Vietnam mostly had to do with making war industry businesses and war hawk politicians wealthier and pretty much had nothing to really do with halting the spread of Marxism. The United States had been in perpetual war from WWII through the Korean War and then into Vietnam with generations sacrificed on the bloody altar of U.S. politics and corporate greed. There was also no end in site.
It wasn't just the youth of a nation fed up with fighting and dying for the wars of politicians and greedy corporation but the parents of those increasingly angry youths were fed up with their kids being stuffed into uniforms against their will and then sent off to die.
The most brilliant move that both Right of Center and Leftist Politicians ever conceived was to end the draft process so that THEN nobody really gave a damn how long wars -- or 'police actions' -- lasted or how much they cost because they were all being conducted by volunteers.
