I've seen valid arguments made both against and in favor of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Personally, I don't take a specific side on this issue. I believe it's up for debate. You may disagree, and that's okay, in fact I encourage users of this stream to voice their disagreement on such issues in a civil manner. Hopefully productive discussions can result, and we can gain insight into the nature of the events and come away with a better understanding of why and how they happened.
Whether you believe the bombings were justified or not, the sheer human cost they exacted is truly tragic, and peace without such desolation would have been a far better alternative a thousand times over. No one denies that. I think it's important to remember the tragedy of the event. If someone argues in favor, then they should acknowledge the desolation that resulted, because that's really what's at the core of this event no matter which angle you approach it from.
We didn't nuke the Japanese because they were Asian. While the United States was rife with racism during this time period, race had nothing to do with the use of the atomic bombs(and it should be noted that some Japanese held racist beliefs as well, claiming superiority over Chinese and Koreans. Not that this justifies the use of atomic bombs. Again, I'm not arguing in favor of their use). If Germany had still been in the war when the bomb became ready, we would have nuked them first. There was never any objection to using the atomic bomb against Germany. In fact, the whole impetus for the Manhattan Project was the fear that the Nazis would beat us to the nuclear finish line.
