Modern technology reflects ancient ones.
What do we call when we move the web page? SCROLLING.
The Romans had 2 pieces of wood with warm wax that they would take a pointy stick and write down things on the wax. They could melt it to erase it. This was called a Tablet and Stylus.
It makes sense that the internet would be obsessed with cats, writing on people's wall, and because Thoth the bird headed God taught things to people, that a social media site would be called Twitter...because Bird is the word.
And when you make video or computer games, the "characters" are called sprites.
I mean, the lap top is a MEDIUM. So there's nods to the supernatural and mythology there, too.

Sprites are actually the images used for 2D objects in games, but you were close enough.
