Radical Islamic teachings, such as embraced by the Taliban, are derived from pseudepigrapha of the Quran, or canons, as written by fanatics to deviate from the original supposed godly word as spoken by Mohammed. These are commonly referred to as fiqh or Imam doctrines. They were created in order to elevate the creator's own personal desires, biases and views. Thus since at its root the word "conservative" means to conserve an original doctrine or ideology we see these terrorists' brand of Islam is not conservative. Puritanical, fanatical and violent it definitely, but not conservative as far as the dogma of Islam goes. This can be easily seen by many things, such as the demand of full covering of women's faces and the murder of homosexuals (both things never required by Mohammed).
