I believe they built in straight runs every five or some odd miles into the interstate highway system back in the 50s so they actually could be used as emergency runways. It may not be poured to the same depth, but I guess it works up to a point and still allows emergency landings.

But I admit I've wondered occasionally about unusual mili flyovers and whether they were ever intended to hint at a message.

Roads can't take that kind of stress on a good day. . .and some jackass decided it would be a good idea to let a frickin' jet with their pressure, weight, and thrust power to take off from a public road! Might as well have let one those stupidly huge construction vehicles drive up and down the road!
