- If you use your position to officially spread a message that has no bearing on that position I think you should face repercussions . That is not cancelling.

- If you send a message as yourself, and you happen to have a lot of influence because of your position, that's fine.

Kaepernick crossed the line from the latter to the former by using his at-work status as representative of the NFL to promote an anti-law enforcement position the NFL itself did not espouse. It was fully within reason for the NFL and its fans to oust him.

I'd contest say, Gina Carano's firing because she posted those images as herself, not with any official work-related accounts and because Pedro Pascal, her co-star, posted similar images at one point without repercussion. Her firing seemed a targeted reprisal against expression of private views not done in any way representing Lucasfilm. What she and Pascal posted was stupid and I disagreed with it, but they did so privately and I don't begrudge them that.
