Stop using "Indians." You're choosing racism by using such a title. You're only a few letters off from "Injun."

Good thing he wasn't trying to discover Turkey. | Centuries ago, Native People &
those brought from Africa were both
burdened with unfortunate epithets. The N-word is now not to be spoken;

In spelling?

Otherwise, "Indios" and "Negros" both originated with the Spanish and were given to people to whom those weren't their names, often with dismissive, belittling or disparaging tones.

That's what I'm saying.

If you will, think about a science fiction. What do you call a human if you're another species? Do you call them Martians if they were born on Mars? No, you call them Terran/Earthlings as this is their place of origin. Or, if you want to refer to Solar systems as the noun of origin it would be Solinian. (I guess? I haven't heard this used before, but I guess that's how you'd say it.) You don't refer to people as where they settle to, but where they settle from.

I would point out that many, if not most, people who use the term "Indian" do so not out of malice, but just because they don't necessarily know how such terms are perceived by others and because our society has essentially made it out to be a benign term.

I would reference some judge spouting "ignorance is no excuse." Especially if they're aware of the term "Native American" which many people in the US have heard, if not most.

The point is not to justify using Indian instead of Native or Native American, but to remind everyone not to immediately condemn and convict someone of being a bigot if they do use the former term. If I know anything from firsthand experience, living in Montana, it's that plenty of folks use it despite having nothing against Natives.

There are absolutely racists out there who will always use it or "Injun" out of hate or disrespect, but we can't assume everyone who says it is automatically in that category.

And you're stating this as if I made such a point. Of course, what you suggest goes without saying as these were not absolution statements - as I had quoted your speech, "Many people have heard, if not most."

Well when your title says, "You're choosing racism if..." naturally I'm going to chime in. That's a bit more than the usual stretch of logic in which memes indulge, IMO.

Yes, the title also assumes that you read the meme for context to the title in which the term Native American is used and ignorance is no longer possible. Those who have not heard of the term are missing from the conversation entirely.

Ignorance IS possible though. I've heard both used interchangeably my entire life. Lots of people are never told that it's wrong to use 'Indian' or even 'American Indian'. I myself didn't learn until probably a year or two ago. Heck, Montana state code uses the term 'American Indian' in many places and I'm pretty sure (though I can go check if you wish) that Native representatives in our Legislature haven't yet introduced legislation to change it. I'm also quite certain such language would have passed with minimal, if any, opposition, since MT has historically been a state in which local government is usually Democrat (the wave of Californians moving here has drowned us in red, but that's a phenomena less than two years old...).

Anyways, I'm just telling you what I know to be true because, quite simply, it is...

THe point I'm trying to make is that, sure there are people who simply don't know. But this conversation is not directed at that audience. This conversation is directed at those who read this meme and are no longer ignorant of the alternative name. By reading this meme alone, you gain the choice of being educated or choosing willful ignorance.
