All I want is an electric Subaru WRX to one day replace my current gas-guzzling (though surprisingly fuel-efficient) version.

I would go electric if I could, but being this rural there is a lack of charging stations currently. Add to that we travel a lot, but my wife's 2018 Cherokee with a v6 gets better gas mileage even towing my boat than my 2013 4 cylinder KIA with a manual tranny gets on the highway.

Plan right now is to wait two more years before replacing mine and we are hoping for a better electric that can also tow my boat.

Cost? Trucks cost almost as much as a house today. I plan on buying another suv that can tow my boat and I have a 5x8 trailer for hauling. SUV’s cost $20k less just to start and are more versatile. When an electric one comes out that I can afford (wife is retired, so we watch what we spend on) I will probably invest.

Ah cost'...... that will be your thought as you pass by a gas station and never stopping to give the Saudies your cash.

Mini: $0.0853 per mile/ $3,839

Mini Electric: $0.066 per mile/ $2,970

Hyundai Kona: $0.0909 per mile /$4,091

Hyundai Kona Electric: $0.066 per mile / $2,970

Its like when we go grocery shopping, some folks look at the total price and think 10 bucks is more expensive than 8 bucks, and others look at the per unit cost and realize 1.40/lb is cheaper than 2.10/lb... despite the total price.

Bad analogy. Up front costs matter. Spending a couple of dollars at the store vs spending tens of thousands upfront on a vehicle. And again, I live in a rural area. Charging stations are getting more places in heavier population centers, but out where I live they are only still in the planning stages.

Now I am in talks with my energy provider and my town about placing a wind turbine at the top of my property. It borders the electrical right of way at the top of my mountain, but the town so far is very hesitant. We would do solar, but due to being on the west side of the mountain and surrounded by trees, solar is not considered visible currently. (Plus I’m not cutting down my sugar maples!)

Nor should you..solar is nice, my family installed panels on the property and they're extremely effective, but it's not worth losing your view.

Just the same here in MT...not enough charging stations to make owning one practical.

What's electricity??

Joking aside, you simply don't understand (which is fair, I don't think you live here). The vast majority of Montana is wilderness and ranch land. No charging ports to be found, which limits EV's to big urban environments and the highways connecting them. I dunno about you, but I'm not going to deny myself the ability to drive into the side roads and backcountry for days on end just for the sake of reducing my own negligible impact on the environment...when charging stations become as commonplace as the gas pumps that fuel outdoor recreation I'll hop on board.

I get 25 mpg in the city and 30-34 on the highway, depending on the trip. Not too shabby when the national average for a new sedan is 24. No way I'm forking over the money for a Tesla when they're all either ugly AF or are seriously out of my budget.

The quest is for net zero, not true zero, emissions. We're well on our way and ICE's aren't going to reverse that trend.

True, but where I live a lot of electricity is still generated via conventional fossil fuel burning. I'm not exactly helping matters any by making myself wholly dependent on a plant that, unlike my car, burns 24/7 and emits massive quantities of pollutants.

The Model 3 gets a $2,000 cut, bringing the price from $39,990 to $37,990 for the Standard Range Plus trim. The cheapest model Tesla sells has a 250-mile range and gets to 60 in 5.3 seconds. The Long Range Model 3 is $46,990, and the Performance version is $54,990.
