White person: Where are you from?
POC: New York
White person: Yeah, but where are you from originally?
POC: New York
White person: But where are your parents from?
POC: Also New York
White Person: What about their parents?
POC: They came from *insert non-white majority country here*
White person: Ahah! *smug self-satisfied smile*
Every one of my non-white friends has had this conversation with someone countless times. I have never come across someone being unsatisfied with the initial answer to this question when it's posed to a white person.
Why do you need to know where someone is from? What's the relevance?
Are you unaware how frequently people that don't have white skin get quizzed about where they're from?
I think you'll find that the questions you ask people say far more about you than them.

"Where are you from?"
"Idaho"
"Oh. I..... ok."
"You're surprised?"
".... no, I just..."
"... just realized that it wasn't actually a simple question about my place of origin and never was?"
No, the Government doesn't ask that question on every form you have ever filled out. Stop being silly. They've never asked me where I'm "from". A couple of forms may have asked me where I was born, but that's about it.
“WHERE ARE YOU FROM” IS NOT A RACIST OR XENOPHOBIC QUESTION. IF YOU THINK A SIMPLE QUESTION ABOUT YOUR PLACE OF ORIGIN IS RACE-BASED, THAT SAYS MORE ABOUT YOU.
