Our taxes go to a gazillion things I deplore. Socialism is just a drop in the ocean of things I don't want the products of my labor going to. Why do I have to go to work every morning just to support things I deplore?

So you disapprove of public roads, schools, parks and recreation?

You think that only the government can make those? The transcontinental railroad was built by private industry. The government makes you think that they are the only ones capable of building roads, schools and parks but private industry can also build all of that without any involvement from the government and at a much lower cost.

The "private industry" that built the railroads did it by being given control over government lands, which they used for their own profit. The government paid plenty for that construction.

The government didn't own any land until Teddy Roosevelt. The government is not supposed to own anything with the exception of the buildings and the land underneath the buildings to operate.

Some were, some weren't. One that didn't ultimately wound up taking over others that did. Competent capitalism outdoes underqualified subsidy.

Our version of capitalism has always involved subsidies.
