The Republicans of the 1850s-1860s were the anti-slavery party. Which is another way of saying they were the pro-black, pro-racial justice party of their time.

They also supported the national bank, railroads — big government projects designed to bring the nation together.

They had their base of support in the North (including cosmopolitan coastal cities) and the far-West.

And yes, they went to war against white supremacists.

It’s not so much the notion that Southern Democrats were Confederates — it’s the notion that Southern Democrats of 1861 have anything to do with the Democratic Party of 2021.

Or that the Republican Party of 1861 has anything to do with the GOP of 2021, for that matter.

We’ve heard it repeated countless times, even here in this comments section, in the face of historical evidence to the contrary and discussion of where the two major American political parties stand today on fundamental topics like race and the size and scope of the federal government.

That whole “South will rise again” thing? It’s gone national and it now finds its home in the morons who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 and those who still — still — believe Trump is going to be inaugurated as the “real president” in August (I am beginning to hear December now)

Trump in all his opulent New York sleaziness has fashioned himself as the new “lost cause” narrative for downtrodden conservative whites across the country.
