Lisa Simpson's Presentation | Passing green legislation is a waste of time. Fossil fuels are here to stay until we come up with a technology that replaces them economically and without coercion. So, yeah, the point here is that research into replacement technology happens when we legislate for it and stops when we don't.

Make no mistake, a day IS COMING - possibly in our lifetimes - when you could dig coal out of the ground and nobody will want to buy it. That day is coming. But if you want the replacement tech to say "Made In America" on it and not "Made In China", now's the time to set that up. Last to market gets the lowest share of the market, as we all know.

I disagree with you. Though government research does contribute to various things, in general, it is the free market that solves 99% of our technological issues. People buy windmills, panels and stuff because they want to live cleaner, but only those who can afford it. So there are two ways to make people greener: Come up with a cheap green alternative or make everyone wealthier because it appears that the wealthier a country becomes, the more they care about the environment, at last as best as we can tell.

I don't know what else to tell you: I'm not doing this as opinion, I'm telling you the factual state of the green energy research industry. I know science research, it's what I do. A big chunk of my bread comes from it.

And I'm TELLING you: the field is dead when the government steps away and becomes active when it doesn't. This is not an invisibile hand of the market thing.

Electric cars didn't have to be a Tesla thing. Saturn could have had that money if they had wanted to. Ford could have had that money. Any single one of those companies could have stepped up and today we'd be like "Elon who??? Never heard of her."

Some industries, you just get a bunch of different companies trying different things out and you see what sticks. This isn't one of them. Corporations make too much money from doing nothing and waiting, and we're going to suffer for it when we have to rush an energy strategy out within two years having wasted the previous twenty.

You're right Jafo. The airplane, mass produced vehicles, telephone, TV, radio. It all came from creative individuals not creative government.

All of those things required government to roll them out.

Show me where the government was required to roll out the airplane. That is nonsense and I am just TELLING you that because I have studied this for a long time.

See how that works?

Legislation of airspace was already a thing when planes were invented. Balloons go back to the 1700s.

That had nothing to do with the creation of airplanes. That's like saying roads invented the car..

Well, what's it's like saying is, sure you can invent the car, but if you let people drive on whatever side of the road they feel like at whatever speed they feel like in a car they don't know how to drive and wouldn't even be able to stop in an emergency if they did, then we wouldn't even have MADE IT to Henry Ford - it would have been a disaster right out the gate.

It's not an accident that the Wright Brothers started their field tests on a weather station facility.

Again, what the HELL does that have to do with creating the TECHNOLOGY? You are talking about implementation.
