When I was in the Army I got promoted ahead of my peers, because I worked hard. When I got out got I got a job as a laborer on a construction site at a bit over minimum wage. My wife also worked and we made ends meet. After 3 months I was making twice minimum wage.

I have worked as a carpenter for over 30 years and make top dollar wherever I go.

My kids were taught to work hard and are all doing well in their fields.

If you are not happy with your employment, it is your job to improve yourself.

If you want to whine about entry level jobs not paying a living wage you are an idiot.

Still, we didn't join to get rich. I heard horror stories from some older vets where the Carter administration would skip some paydays. Good times.

I only remember because it was a big deal that the Military was switching to all volunteer in the early '70s. They almost tripled the entry pay. When I joined the E5's complained that we PV1's were making double what they had been only months before.

From WWII to the end of Vietnam there was little rise in compensation.

$55 a month and double that if you went Airborne! That is how they got people to overcome their fear of heights.

A basic U.S. military E1 <4 mos makes $9.52 an hour.

When I enlisted I made $144 a month. Just a year earlier it was about $55 a month.

Jump pay was $55 a month and when I got out it had gone up to $80.
