Because humanity is destroying the only habitat it has in its rapacious and insatiable desire for material wealth.
Yup.
Problem is, accepting a lower standard of living is never gonna be a message that will sell or win elections. If Democrats lose, then all progress on the environment is instantly erased. And the next election loss is just around the corner, historically speaking.
Humanity has never before had to unite to face a shared challenge of this scale and scope. We’re not psychologically wired to put our own self-interest aside to help a stranger on the other side of the globe or even, it appears, our own kids. (Judging by the overall Boomer reaction to climate change — “I’ll be dead so who cares?” — our psychological profiles are too short-termist).
So, are we totally f**ked? I think so. But even if failure is inevitable, we’re morally obligated to try.
