This "compliance" is not a new ask. It's pure Jim Crow.
From 30 Days a Black Man (an account of the Jim Crow south in the late 40s) " . . . to stay out of trouble and avoid harm you had to be vigilant as well as meek, lowly and docile. Trouble could come simply by forgetting or refusing to say 'sir' to a white man. You always say 'sir, Dobbs warned him, whether you or the white man starts the conversation. If a white man -- drunk or sober -- hits you, you never hit back. You just take it. You never argue with the white conductor of a train, bus, or streetcar, or, for that matter, with any white man in a position of authority. Do what he says and shut up. . . . . If you have the bad luck to bump into a white woman, or offend her in any way, don't reply or defend yourself if she starts insulting you. Just take off your hat, apologize, and back away."
That's what the comply or die crowd is demanding.
