His politics aren't the point. Anyone, whatever sexual orientation or gender, whatever ethnic group, whatever religion, can have a bad day when they feel so desperate and angry that they want to kill someone. If lots of people are armed to the teeth, then those bad days are going to come with bodybags.

I've had very bad days and managed to not kill anyone. Heck, I had a bad day last week, and yesterday was a gut punch...but nobody died.
