I always thought that it was an interesting view on a child's naivete vs. an adult's pessimism, but it's always interested to hear other opinions.

I kind of like that . . . the young Luke is rather naive in his belief in his father's reformability*, and the older Luke, having seen more of the galaxy, is rather cynical about people's tendency to turn to evil.

*Compare the original version of this trope in the novel Scaramouche, where the hero doesn't even imagine that his evil father can be reformed. (And, yes, totally the source of the story beat.)

except he was right when he said there was good in his father. And Ben Solo turned good in the end, so he was wrong about him.

My point is, both ideas tell you about where Luke is at that point in his life, not about the other person.
