Actually he didn't go to hell for 3 days. He went to heaven for 3 days. Remember when he told the thief when he was on the cross? He said, "Truly I tell you, I will see you in heaven today."

when Jesus died, he went to hell for 3 days to take the keys of hell and strip satan of his power.
now he "tempts us" because he has no power it's only what we give him

I think it's in one of the Pauline epistles. But I think it was everyone who had served God whole-heartedly, but, since Heaven hadn't been opened by Christ yet, they went to Hades (or temporary Limbo) instead.
