When Gene Roddenberry was trying to sell Star Trek to the networks, they balked at having a woman as second in command (in the pilot episode). He re-worked it and had Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock become second in command and the NBC approved the series. Today, of course, we would think nothing of having a woman as second in command or even in command. Times change.

Second command in the space kitchen, maybe.

No, in the original pilot "The Cage," Majel Barrett played "Number 1." Second in command under Captain Christopher Pike (played by Jeffery Hunter). Much of the footage of that pilot is seen in the first season episode, "The Menagerie."
