When Gene Roddenberry was trying to sell Star Trek to the networks, they balked at having a woman as second in command (in the pilot episode). He re-worked it and had Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock become second in command and the NBC approved the series. Today, of course, we would think nothing of having a woman as second in command or even in command. Times change.
