The protections of being President kept him from being criminally indicted himself. He will use whatever political capital he still has, the prospect of running again in 2024, etc. to try to keep scrutiny off him to the maximum extent.

The tax case against him is definitely progressing after a SCOTUS ruling. Other cases are in the works.

The uber-wealthy have a way of avoiding justice, even if they've never served as President. But we'll see.
