When I was younger I wondered that same thing but now I get it. If someone who is already on my payroll wants to learn a new job I’m all for crosstraining. It shows initiative if a driver wants to learn how to operate heavy equipment or vice versa. Or if somebody wants to learn how to batch. That’s great. But with my responsibilities I simply don’t have the time to train someone from the ground up who has no license and no experience in our industry. Everyone on my payroll is a CDL driver, including me. I’m the operations manager and can jump in a truck if necessary. I pay primarily for driving experience and then spend time teaching specialized skills.
