If there is a good reason for them to know, then they should know. If there isn't a good reason, then it doesn't matter if you keep it a secret. But kids shouldn't lie about anything if they're asked.

Agreed... they can have the secret until they are directly asked

It's fine to have secrets, in fact, it can be unhealthy if a parent knows exactly what their child is doing at all times, but secrets about things like schoolwork and breaking things should not be kept

Agreed

No. Unless it's something like they're making a birthday card for mom or want to do something special like that

Ah. I know I had some secrets... I only told them if they specifically asked

As a parent I would not want my child keeping secrets from me if they were harmful like say another adult told them not to tell Mom and Dad something. That can lead to abuse. But a kid keeping a secret between friends like who he has a crush on isn't really harmful.

Yeah. I guess the problem is that some kids don't know what secrets are harmful, and which ones are just silly. I'm sure your child is smart enough to make the distinction.

what if your kid is on imgflip without you knowing?

I put that under the harmless category, unless they do face reveals or something stupid

I'm 15yo and I keep simple secrets from my parents like what gifts I get for them or sometimes I won't talk about my life with friends(not that I do bad stuff with them, it's just that we do and share a lot of personal information). Now, I've kept some major, harmful and terrible secrets from my parents and let me tell you, the truth ALWAYS comes out; no matter what. And some secrets(no matter how personal or embarrassing they are) can be harmful if not to your parents but you! TL;DR: learn the difference between a harmless and a harmful secret; if it doesn't feel right that you know something and your parents don't, tell them!

Yeah. I had one secret that ended up being really bad. Turns out, if I had just told them, I would be in a much better position right now

it depends on the secret. i don't like my mom knowing everything about me because i need privacy but if someone was being creepy i would tell her right away.

That’s a good way to think about it.

as long as it's harmless & doesn't negatively impact the person or someone else, it's fine to keep the secret

Yes. One example: The child is LGBTQ+ and the parents are homophobic/tranisphobic/bigots against whichever the kid is.
