The problem with that flag isn't the rebels during the civil war. A battle flag isn't necessarily a big deal.
But after the war, a certain terrorist group that I won't mention here used it for their flag. That's why it's generally considered a racist flag, today.

You're thinking of the Buddhist mirror image swastika (know as the Manji.) That symbol is good luck for Buddhists.

Yeah. The south seceded from the Union. South Carolina was the first to secede in December of 1860, and then the others followed. The CSA was founded in February of 1861.

And then there was the attack on Fort Sumpter and the Civil War. It ended in 1865.
