I'm pretty sure anybody who watched Liberty's Kids would have some general idea that Jefferson was not a racist.

sadly people just want to take him down, and try to paint him as a racist.

Thomas Jefferson quote slavery | image tagged in thomas jefferson quote slavery | made w/ Imgflip meme maker
Jefferson was no fan of slavery, he thought that it should end and predicted that it would end.

But.

This quote is something we would today recognize as white separatist.

If Jefferson saw no way of bringing about an end to slavery, then it is probably because he saw no way of making our democracy fully multiracial.

Indeed it has proven one of the most enduring and challenging tasks of American history, but that is no reason not to try, and future Americans from Frederick Douglass to Abraham Lincoln to MLK Jr. made heroic efforts to do just that.

just because he says this doesn't mean he wishes it wasn't so, racism will never not exist, we will always remember oppression and the races living together can never be completely perfect because of the past, which is his thought process imo. Jefferson was moderate expect when it came to libertarianism, for a while he was not as vocal to stay neutral, but as time passed he fully began opposing slavery.

Jefferson was surely no fan of slavery, but this quote of his on the subject has a mealy-mouthed “both sides” ring to it

“No immediate solution to the problem”

Awfully terse analysis from a man who was so usually full of ideas

well, slavery is no longer here today, but we still feel the effects.

That I'd agree to.

It's hard if not impossible to erase the lingering effects of treating human like cattle for hundreds of years.

Many black Americans are still alive today who lived under segregation. And definitely those whose parents and grandparents lived through it.

Did all of this discrimination put them and their families at a disadvantage -- financially, educationally, and otherwise? You bet.

Racism and its effects don't go away through the stroke of a pen proclaiming legal equality.
