Everyone has a tendency to regard the cultural products of their time (music, TV, movies, and now, memes) as superior.
It's bias stemming mainly from these two facts: 1. People are more emotional in their teenage/early-adulthood years, and therefore more likely to resonate with art of their youth; 2. Over time, the classics of the past get remembered, while all the stupid crap that was produced back then gets forgotten. We're left with a selective hindsight that includes only the superior cultural products.
When it comes to memes, it's the exact same process. We remember the "hits" and forget the crap that was obviously bad or just never took off.
As for me, I think meme culture has developed and matured from where it used to be. Old memes tended to be focused on "the lolz" and didn't need a whole lot of complexity or technical innovation to do it. But now we also have whole meme subgenres related to politics, history, art, etc. etc.
Which memes being produced today will stand the test of time and still be seen as classics 5-10 years down the road, or more?
The truth is, we won't know until we reach that point.
Buckle up!
