When you go to the meme page, show others it it, or a mod looks at it, it counts as a view

Usually sometimes it can count your memes and gifs as views, you can let people view it in your comments if it goes up or down in your comments.

How do memes that aren't submitted get views?

Memes that are not features (nor even submitted) are not locked or anything. Anybody who has its URL can see it and generate views in the process.

Maybe it has to do with the tags used when people use the search box?

Unfeatured images have no tags
