The First Amendment has always had recognized exceptions: treason being one of them, conspiracy to commit crimes, etc etc.

Those who have gotten away with it up till now have done so only due to lax enforcement

I agree, and the people are the most lax. Most are so absorbed in the drama of their lives that they can't seem to think rationally or think for themselves.
