That’s not how it works. You can’t switch parties after they’ve pinned you as an icon of evil. He would’ve had to run the first term as a democrat for this to work.

Happens all the time. A month ago Paul Mitchell switched from Republican to Independent. A year ago, Jeff van Drew switched from Democrat to Republican.

Trump had to swicth parties because he never even have a chance in his own hometown, where he's been a laughing stock since the 1970s. That's why he never ran for local office.
