Different era racism and "good man" doesn't work.
You can say "hey, he was a racist and a misogynist, but he was a talented actor and those movies can be good."
Separate the work from the worker. Sure. It happens a lot. Look at HP Lovecraft. Dude was a straight up and down to his bones racist. But people use his work while still acknowledging a lot of it was gross racism. But no one says HP was a good man. He wasn't.
But to say John Wayne was a good man, that he is someone to be admired? That means you're pretty okay with his racism. And sexism. And his support of Nixon after Watergate because it wasn't a big deal.
And that's not okay.
