Believing in heroes isn’t what will disappoint you whistlelock. It’s believing that your heroes are perfection and aren’t human and don’t share all the same capacity for mistakes and errors that all humans can make.

Depends on if you care if they care. You guys confuse idols and icons and heroes. There’s a difference in each.

You can say "hey, he was a racist and a misogynist, but he was a talented actor and those movies can be good."

Separate the work from the worker. Sure. It happens a lot. Look at HP Lovecraft. Dude was a straight up and down to his bones racist. But people use his work while still acknowledging a lot of it was gross racism. But no one says HP was a good man. He wasn't.

But to say John Wayne was a good man, that he is someone to be admired? That means you're pretty okay with his racism. And sexism. And his support of Nixon after Watergate because it wasn't a big deal.

And that's not okay.

Icon and watergate? Are you offended by Obama and Obamagate. So you practice selective outrage. John. Wayne was a great American his views on race are irrelevant to me. He never promoted inequality nor segregation and spoke openly of his opinion. You can disagree with his opinion and still respect him. Oh wait your a leftist and disagreement isn’t allowed anymore. Thought unity or your a racist Nazi is the motto now. I can’t think of anything more in American than that and you practice it routinely.

If racism doesn't bother you, have you considered that you're a racist?

Yes, he did promote inequality (remember the white supremecy bit?). You should read up what he said about Native Americans.

Was he a talented actor? Yeah. Did he make some good and bad movies? Yep.

Do I have to respect him or his racist bullshit? Nope.

If you're comfortable with racist views, you should work on yourself.

Yes he was an imperfect man and a product of his era. So what, he didn’t preach abuse or violation of rights. He held a distasteful view name your perfect hero, I bet he’s got a skeleton somewhere. I bet you still like Michael Jackson songs.

Look like he was known for racist overtones in some of his works and his disparagement of Hebrews are also suspect. Interesting guy though all in all.
