What's amusing is the Authoritarian party is doing everything they're accusing the Democrats of doing, including using Orwell's playbook.

They latch onto the “censorship” idea, assuming it’s all the same, not realizing that what made the regime of 1984 tyrannical was the censorship of *truth* specifically, and the wholesale substitution of an alternative reality through state-backed propaganda.

We can have debates, but at the end of the day, there is one reality and we have to decide what it is. Anything that deviates too radically from that reality (I.e. denying the Holocaust, insisting blacks are inferior or that Jews are running the world or that all Democrats are baby-eating pedophiles, pretending that Trump won the ‘20 election) ought to be considered for censorship.

We still live in a free society with freedom of the press and professional journalists, but Trump and his followers have done more than anyone to try to discredit the press and substitute their own reality where Trump is always right and Trump always wins. He won’t succeed, but in a country with a weaker tradition of democracy and freedom he could, and this moment is still dangerous.

Yeah. I don't believe that any system which allows someone like trump to lead it for four years is viable, nor even worth saving.

Justice will come, I think. But will take time.

Sitting Presidents cannot be criminally indicted per longstanding OLC guidance, while on the civil lawsuit front, Trump has so far evaded having to appear for them himself by invoking the “I’m too busy being President” (non-)defense. Those two protections at least will disappear on Jan. 20 at noon.

Indeed, some of the theoretical guardrails like the impeachment process, or the 25th Amendment, or even just basic political accountability out of the Republican Party for members of its own clan (which existed at the time of Richard Nixon, when the inevitability of his resignation was sealed when Republicans withdrew support and essentially forced him out) are pretty much gone. Even now with Trump attempting a legal coup and now openly mulling a military coup, the silence from the GOP is deafening. All that is deeply disturbing.

But you’re right, whether legal accountability ever really comes for Trump will determine whether we live in a country where a President is ultimately above the law, or not.
