this was based of a real operation the US were planing 2 do during the Cold war because they didint want the USSR 2 beat theme to the space race

Its because America threatened to nuke the moon if the Russians wouldn't stop sending spies to steal missile plans.

Think about it, humans will advance in the future and eventually settle or build bases on the moon and expand. If the humans aren't untied in the future and are still divided by Nations thinking about the effect of a nuclear head hitting the moon is realistic.
