Stephen Hillenberg, the creator, and therefore whom I consider to be “ the artist” never confirmed that the Spongebob character is gay. Stephen passed away in 2018, and there is no credible evidence to suggest his position on the character changed before he died.
That being said, it’s important to respect all people, and how they choose to identify. And the beautiful thing about cartoon characters, and fiction is they can become whoever you want them to be. So, if you think he’s gay...then he is gay. Your brain, your reality.
The primary motivation behind the comic—aside from the fact that it was Spongebob Christmas weekend here on imgflip, was actually me, TD1437, making a meme for my younger sister.
We watch “Better Off Dead” together every year at Christmas. It’s one of our traditions. But, since we’re dealing with a pandemic, we agreed it was morally irresponsible for me to fly home this Christmas. So, I made the comic for her since we will be apart.
So, in summary, the comic had nothing to do with the sexuality of the characters. I made the comic for Spongebob Christmas weekend, and for my sister.
Was it funny? Probably not to those who don’t like 80s movies. But, I hope this explanation will make you smile a little...hopefully.
