That you are not paying for it should have helped to answer your own question....But let us pretend that you were paying....I believe that most people entering this degree are looking to become a detective, police officer, or like yourself, to enter law. If that’s the case, earning a degree in Criminal Justice may not be the way to go. According to the BLS, police officers and detectives are not necessarily required to have a degree beyond their high school diploma. This is because most of the practical knowledge is earned upon joining the academy through sponsored on-the-job training.
In your case, your goal is to enter law, but there are better degrees that will train you for getting into law school (It may be a tad different with paralegals as I do not know how rigorous their education is). One law school expert, Ann Levine, believes that Criminal Justice is not considered academically rigorous by major law schools. Instead, Levine recommends a degree like political science, that requires research, serious thought, and analysis.
Personally, I have had some cousins who had spent a great deal of money studying Criminal Justice with the hope of becoming police offices in Toronto. It did not help them, as they never realized that dream, and they are not stupid or dense people. All are doing hands-on careers now such as electricians.....and they are making a great deal more money than they would have been paid as police officers, and police officers are quite well paid in Toronto.
