In this country, we’re conditioned from a young age to believe that those who are poor are pore because they’re lazy or scheming or addicted to drugs, never that maybe they didn’t have the opportunities that others have had.
Sprinkle in some Ayn Rand-inspired insanity and you get trickle-down economics, out-of-control greed, and income disparity, which breeds resentment, which foments bad things.
All of this flies in the face of what Christianity (the primary religion of this country) teaches us, but the ultra-powerful and uber-wealthy wrap themselves in the flag and hug a cross because if history’s taught us anything, it’s that religion is the opiate of the masses.
