It was conglomeration of principalities not one of which was called Germany. The ruler of the Holy Roman Empire was the Austo-Hungarian royalty by that time. Note it wasn’t called Germany. Germany did not come into being until 1871 when the Prussians initiated the German empire. So Americans could not have begged Germany for help in the 1770’s.
