Trade Unions are a form of labor rights not necessarily communism. America prospered with them by practicing capitalism not communism.

But the people at the forefront of the labor rights movement were overwhelming socialist.

Once again you project modern sensibilities on history. As a decendant of someone involved in various labor demonstrations most didn’t think of themselves as socialists. They saw themselves as working men demanding equity from all powerful conglomerates. It built the Democratic Party based on the working man. They were proud Americans. Unlike the New Democratic Party that insults the working man routinely and has largely shed his values and denigrates his country.

"They saw themselves as working men demanding equity from all powerful conglomerates."

That's literally what modern socialists are advocating for.

"It built the Democratic Party based on the working man."

I thought people like you said that democrats in the 1900s were racist? I'm genuinely confused. And also, the modern democratic party is in no way socialist at all.

Funny way of advocating for the working man. Repeatedly denouncing them and belittling them. Also funny how they dont go after the billionaires who have concentrated the most wealth ever like gates, zuckerberg, Beezos and the Google guy. You would think they would be prime targets but coincidentally they are “allies.” Whose on first?

People like you? Many democrats were openly racist. Primarily Southern Democrats who held lineage of beliefs, while the northern and western democrats tended to reject racism. In those days a Southern Democrat was a Liberal Republican. This was prior to extreme polarization of the parties To left and right. Within each party you had left and right leaners, unlike now. You must understand context of the times and changing morals and sensibilities. The problem now is everyone judges history by modern sensibilities and it is unfair and wrong to judge history by through the lenses of Monday morning quartebacks who show up after the game was played and tell you what you did wrong.

Wait what are you talking about? Socialists absolutely go after Gates, Zuckerberg, Pichai and ESPECIALLY Jeff Bezos. Multi-billionaires are inherently anti-socialist. No socialist supports these people.

Also, the civil rights movement was also championed by socialists, the most famous being Martin Luther King Jr.

Is that what MLK called himself? A socialist? Is that what he said he was?

"Call it democracy, or call it democratic socialism, but there must be a better distribution of wealth for all god's children." -MLK Jr.

"I imagine you already know that I am much more socialistic in my economic theory than capitalistic...capitalism started out with a noble and high motive… but like most human systems it fell victim to the very thing it was revolting against. So today capitalism has out-lived its usefulness.” -MLK Jr.

“We must recognize that we can’t solve our problem now until there is a radical redistribution of economic and political power… this means a revolution of values and other things. We must see now that the evils of racism, economic exploitation and militarism are all tied together… you can’t really get rid of one without getting rid of the others… the whole structure of American life must be changed. America is a hypocritical nation and [we] must put [our] own house in order.” -MLK Jr.

“The evils of capitalism are as real as the evils of militarism and evils of racism.” -MLK Jr.

I agree with all you're saying but I also think billionaires shouldn't exist and that the workplace should be owned democratically instead of an authoritarian boss.
0 ups, 4y
Well he was wrong about capitalism. The only thing capitalism needs is to enforce the provisions of monopolies and competition. Make corporations pay their taxes and break up the tech
and other Monopolies

Anarchists played an influential role in the 20th century labor movement. Yes, in America.

As did every other persuasion, funny the unions still organized but we didn’t become an anarchist state though.

I mean, the Bolsheviks literally had to pretend to adopt anarchist principles and ideals in order to prevail in the October Revolution, but, okay.
0 ups, 4y
And it was a sad day for the world that the bolsheviks won. That lead to the death of millions.

Maybe because anarchists were smaller in numbers, but were still a prominent voice in left politics at the time, and were there for every crucial labor event. Eugene Debs was one of the founders of the IWW, an anarcho-syndicalist union.

Also "anarchist state" is an oxymoron.
0 ups, 4y
Anarchists have never been a prominent voice in anything. They have always been what they are, a fringe Group.

You know strikers were literally shot at and killed, right?
0 ups, 4y
Yes they were, until the strikers organized with muscle from the mob. Jimmy Hoffa style. So what?
