It's been so long now. It's a pretty obvious feature everywhere, is there a reason why we don't have it?

It becomes a different feature if we do that. Right now following allows you to customize what you see in Followed Users. If followers are displayed publicly then it adds a social stigma, meaning people may decide to follow or not follow just to make a statement, which would prevent them from fully utilizing the original feature.

I am curious to hear what people consider the most useful aspect of having followers though.

What if the list was private? Like only I can see my own followers?

Then some people might not follow you because they like to be more private about their tastes. Or alternatively, they might follow you in order to send you a positive message, but then they might actually not enjoy having your memes displayed on the Followed Users page.

I suppose this is why Facebook has multiple ways of following/friending/ignoring someone now.

If we really want more functionality I suppose we could add options for each follower you add. Checkboxes to enable displaying on the other person's profile, enable their content in your Followed Users page, and any future options we want.
