Since coins have been used much long than paper or papyrus currency, I believe a time may well come when nations feel currency is unneeded or undesirable. But like many trends it will likely come and go.

I think we are indeed transitioning to a electronic credits based system and honestly, I don't think that's such a bad thing. I rarely ever use cash since credit/debit is so much more efficient. Credit card systems are susceptible to hackers, but so are modern banking systems so it really doesn't make much difference to me on that front. It also makes more sense economically and enviromentally as coins don't have to be mined and minted and paper money doesn't have to be printed.

I sure hope not. I like being able to use cash.

And think about this, what about things like garage sales? Or maybe some kind of sale at a school ro school vending machines? Are the kids just going to carry around cards? Or would those things be eliminated entirely.

And it's not like that'll make it easier to teach kids about money either.

I prefer cash too, it's pretty near impossible to get into debt if you spend only what you have. I think credit cards are the biggest scam in history, they exist solely to get people into debt.

Just seeing the coin shortage signs everywhere basically requesting people to pay with cards now got me thinking.

That too. And it makes a psychological difference actually handing over cash versus just swiping a card. Easier to save that way.

YEP! That's what it'd be. It's different if you can actually see it and hold it and count how much you really have.

My little brother used to get excited when he would have a 5$ bill, buy a candy then get 4 one dollar bills back because he thought he had more money, lol. Yea if the coin shortage continues my kids might not see dimes and nickels when they become old enough to start spending money.

Do you think there will ever come a time people won't use paper money or coins anymore?
1 up, 4y
Yes, when the one world government wants total control. You won't even be able to possess money if they disapprove of you because they could seize it instantly.

I'm not sure it'll be abolished, but at some point the rules regarding its creation will have to be reinvented. Fiat currency and interest (which is mostly electronic) divorce money from real wealth and real capital (labor) and concentrates economic power in the hands of plutocrats. And I'm not arguing for a return to the gold standard, because having a fixed amount of exchange tokens (what money ultimately is) is insane when the number of buyers and things to be bought is constantly changing.

Don't get me started on stock markets.

I dunno... Imagine finding a credit card on the ground instead of a quarter

I think this was poorly worded, a lot of people are talking about the physical currency, but the question asks if CURRENCY will ever become obsolete. Money will all eventually become virtual, I think that is safe to say. The real question is, can you world live in a world without currency?

Maybe.

It would be the laziest world ever though. In a world where you don't have to work to get food, is a world where people will stop MAKING food. People need a reason to contribute to society, and that's why currency exists. Maybe I read this wrong.

I don't know.

Goodbye.

currency would become useless when everyone has a good amount of it, while it would make things more beautiful as everyone is gonna be able to afford more for themselves and families, what would be the point of business or work, if you have enough to take leave...whenever and making a job is gonna be kinda hard if we can just...have more, plus sock market crash is gonna come, and that’s when crap hits the fan, as everyone just blew money away saying “we’ve always got more!” and that would bring just about the end of civilization as jobs have been out of business for YEARS!, and big banks have been failing, that could be a big blow, and we wouldn’t recover from it, in short, if everyone had a HUGE AMOUNT OF CASH, than things could go very bad, and we might all die out, unless smart people who saved up for this occasion have a good soul and let those without have some

tldr, if everyone had a lot that’s when money isn’t worth it anymore, and then it will become worth it

Hard cash, yes, definitely. Cryptocurrencies are going to explode again, soon, too. Defi is where the massive gains are right now...as well as massive losses. Ampleforth has been fairly predictable lately. I have yet to get into it, but I'm going to. But at $0.60 each and sell at $2.40 each...a sweet 4X...I've seen it happen 5 times in a row in a two month period. I bet it keeps doing so for at least a few months, too.

The concept of money will always exist. It requires communism in its most extreme form to make money obsolete. Communism to a so far level that even Marx and Engels would not have dreamed of it to be possible. What is the point of money if all resources we have are equally shared, eh?

When it comes to digital money and cash, then we're talking. In Sweden cash will get you nowhere, or so I'm told. Even a street musician will not accept cash anymore there.
In order to make a world where cash no longer exists possible I do think we will need to go to one system. In the U.S. you seem to have only cash or credit card. I am not fond of credit cards. Not because it's digital, but because credit card is always a money loan and have to be paid back later. In the Netherlands paying by PIN-card was more popular, since the money is directly removed from your bank account and therefore you are not buying on credit, so no nasty surprises afterward with creditors being after you because you spent to much. Now due to the upcoming of cell phones this system is also bound to disappear, but many companies are now trying to jump in. Even companies I think should keep themselves away from making transactions their business, like Apple for example.

There's also cryptocurrency. IMHO only an idiot would believe in those. It seems nice, money to which no government has control over, and thus "freedom" and this is precisely what makes this so interesting to criminals and tax avoiders. Also the lack of authority also turns them easily into bubbles. We've seen bitcoin swell up like crazy and anyone well-versed in economy then knows that it's not a matter if it will burst, but when, and that the damage caused will be unmeasurable. Cryptocurrencies actually undermine the normal economy streams. Several countries even considered to ban them, however although this is legally possible, technically it's not possible as the internet makes it so easy to avoid things.

In the end we will have to see what will survive and what the standard payment method will become worldwide. It is clear that coins and paper money may likely disappear and become relics of old times. But there are more problems to solve before all this can become a reality. Some people are legally banned from digital money, and the removal of cash would ban them from buying food which is a fundamental right that you cannot infringe. Those kinds of things will need to be resolved first.
