Having to explain a joke, aaahhhhhhh.
Look: the quote is well known as being misunderstood as one from Hitler. But the whole idea of the "colossal untruth" is actually from Hitler. If you don't believe me, check out the "Big lie" page on Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_lie) which describes where Hitler was quoted: in his book Mein Kampf. The quote I'm using is the common "false Nazi quotation" attributed (wrongly) to Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi Minister of Propaganda. Goebbels did however say:
"The essential English leadership secret does not depend on particular intelligence. Rather, it depends on a remarkably stupid thick-headedness. The English follow the principle that when one lies, one should lie big, and stick to it. They keep up their lies, even at the risk of looking ridiculous."
Now if that doesn't describe the current situation in the US I don't know what does.
The joke is meta, i.e., the quote has been repeated both as a truth and as a lie, enough times that nobody is clear about whether it is or isn't. That's actually the *point* of propaganda, and it's actually what Steve Bannon was on about when he said "flood the zone with shit." All of you who actually believe a word coming out of Trump's mouth are falling prey not to whether or not something is true or isn't -- that's not the point -- it's flooding the zone with so much shit that nobody can figure out what's true or not anymore, to devalue truth and to distract. That's propaganda. QAnon and the rest of this "shit" is purely cheap and rather stupid propaganda, and sadly people are buying it.
So yeah, I'm the f-cking idiot.
