It’s a continuation of the 2016 platform with no changes, circumventing the proper procedure of convening a platform committee. The decision to do this was made without consulting state delegates, and on the basis that “The RNC, had the Platform Committee been able to convene in 2020, would have undoubtedly unanimously agreed to reassert the Party’s strong support for President Donald Trump and his Administration.”
I hope we can agree that that statement is ridiculous; of course they would have supported the President, but that isn’t a basis for choosing not to adjust the platform to reflect the challenges of 2020-24 (which are wildly different from those of 2016-20). The party has nothing to say about the pandemic, about police brutality, about foreign influence in elections, about hyper-partisanship or political discourse, about cyber threats via social media platforms? Come on. This is either cowardly or just plain lazy.
