Agreed. Unfortunately, that's not practical when both parents work. Plus, as a tax paying citizen (actually, a citizen paying what I consider a grotesque amount of taxes) I would prefer to get some return on that payment.
Growing up in the midwest, I never experienced a teacher attempting to influence me politically, until I took a first year anthropology course, and heard an earful about what a horrible human being J. Robert Oppenheimer was. We didn't study much anthro that first quarter, but we were were indoctrinated against the advancement of science. I suppose that professor would have preferred the Nazis develop the bomb first, since it was going to happen anyway.
